Tangu ilipozinduliwa mwishoni mwa miaka ya 1980, MPC haikuwa tu chombo cha kutengeneza muziki; ilikuwa njia mpya ya kufikiria, kuhisi, na kuunda sauti.

Roger Linn aliunda mashine hiyo kwa ushirikiano na Akai Professional, na mwaka 1988, MPC60 iliingia sokoni na kubadilisha kila kitu. Kabla ya MPC, watengenezaji wa muziki walitegemea synthesizers ngumu na sequencers zilizokuwa na mipaka mingi. MPC ilileta uhuru mpya — uwezo wa kupiga sampuli za sauti za ulimwengu wa kweli na kuziweka pamoja kwa njia ambazo hazijawahi kusikika hapo awali.

Lakini ni nini hasa kilichofanya MPC iwe maalum sana kwa hip-hop?

Jibu lipo katika vidole.

Pads za rubber za MPC — zile mraba ndogo zinazoguswa ili kutoa sauti — zilibadilisha uhusiano kati ya mtengenezaji wa muziki na muziki wake. Badala ya kuchora noti kwenye skrini au kubonyeza vitufe vya piano baridi, watengenezaji walianza kugonga, kupiga, na kucheza pads kwa vidole vyao. Muziki ulianza kuhisi kama kitu cha kimwili, cha mwili, cha roho. J Dilla, labda mtengenezaji mkubwa zaidi aliyewahi kutumia MPC, alibadilisha dhana hii hadi sanaa ya hali ya juu. Midundo yake haikuwa safi au kamili kwa njia ya kimashine — ilikuwa na mapigo yaliyochelewa kidogo, yaliyopigwa kwa nguvu tofauti, yaliyoathiriwa na hisia za wakati huo. Watu waliita hilo "drunk" au "wonky" — lakini kwa kweli ilikuwa ubinadamu ukitiririka kupitia mashine.

Dilla hakujifunza kutoka kwa kitabu. Alicheza MPC kama mtu anavyocheza gitaa au ngoma — kwa hisia, kwa msukumo, kwa mazungumzo ya ndani kati yake na sauti. Mabamu kama "Donuts," yaliyotengenezwa alipokuwa hospitalini akipigana na ugonjwa mbaya, ni ushahidi kwamba MPC ilikuwa zaidi ya chombo — ilikuwa lugha.

Na lugha hiyo ilienea.

DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, RZA, Kanye West wakiwa mwanzo wa kazi yake — wote walipitia shule ya MPC. Kila mmoja alichukua sauti moja — sampling ya rekodi za zamani za jazz, soul, funk, na rock — na kuitengeneza upya kwa njia yake mwenyewe. Hii ndiyo nguvu ya kweli ya MPC: haikuambia mtengenezaji anapaswa kufanya nini. Iliuliza tu: "Una nini cha kusema?"

Sampling yenyewe ni mada inayogawanya watu. Wengine wanasema ni wizi. Wengine wanasema ni sanaa ya juu zaidi ya ubunifu — kuchukua kipande cha historia ya muziki na kukiingiza katika mazungumzo mapya. MPC ilifanya sampling kuwa rahisi, ya haraka, na ya kina zaidi. Ungeweza kuchukua sekunde mbili za sauti ya besi kutoka rekodi ya James Brown iliyotolewa mwaka 1969, uipige sampuli kwenye MPC, uirudie na kuibadilisha, na ghafla — ulikuwa na msingi wa wimbo mpya unaozungumza na ulimwengu wa miaka ya 1990 au 2000.

Lakini MPC haikuwa tu kuhusu sampling. Ilikuwa kuhusu groove.

Groove ni dhana ngumu kuelezea lakini rahisi kuhisi. Ni wakati muziki unakufanya utake kusogea mwili wako bila kufikiria. Ni hilo "kitu" ambacho kinafanya midundo ya hip-hop kuwa tofauti na muziki mwingine wowote duniani. Na MPC, kwa sababu ya jinsi ilivyokuwezesha kupiga pads kwa mikono yako na kudhibiti kila kipigo kwa nguvu na muda, ilifanya groove kuwa jambo la kibinafsi kabisa.

Quantization — mchakato wa kusahihisha muda wa noti ili ziwe kamili kimashine — ilikuwa kipengele kilichokuwepo kwenye MPC, lakini watengenezaji wakubwa mara nyingi waliizima. Walitaka midundo yao isiwe kamili. Walitaka sauti ya binadamu — ile kupumzika kidogo kabla ya kipigo, ile nguvu zaidi kwenye noti fulani, ile hisia ya mtu halisi akicheza muziki. Hii ndiyo sababu midundo ya J Dilla au Madlib inajihisi tofauti na midundo iliyotengenezwa kwa programu za kompyuta peke yake — kuna uhai ndani yake.

MPC pia ilibadilisha jinsi watengenezaji wanavyofikiria kuhusu wakati wao wa kufanya kazi. Studio kubwa na ghali hazikuhitajika tena. Ungeweza kununua MPC, kukaa chumba chako cha kulala, na kuunda muziki wa daraja la juu. Hip-hop, kwa asili yake, daima umekuwa kuhusu kufanya mengi kwa kidogo. MPC ilifanya ndoto hiyo iwe halisi. Vijana kutoka mitaa ya New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Atlanta, Chicago — wote waliweza kuunda ulimwengu wao wa muziki bila kupitia milango ya studio kubwa.

Hii ilikuwa mapinduzi ya kidemokrasia ya muziki.

Na mapinduzi hayo yaliendelea kuathiri jinsi hip-hop unavyoundwa hadi leo. Ingawa sasa kuna programu nyingi za kompyuta zinazoweza kufanya kila kitu ambacho MPC ilifanya na zaidi, bado watengenezaji wengi wanarudisha mikono yao kwenye MPC — au kwenye vifaa vya kisasa kama MPC One, MPC Live, na MPC X vilivyoundwa na Akai Professional kuendelea na urithi huo. Kuna kitu kuhusu uguso wa kimwili, kuhusu kupiga pads kwa vidole, ambacho bado haijaweza kuigwa kikamilifu na ulimwengu wa kidijitali.

Zaidi ya hapo, MPC imekuwa ishara ya utamaduni. Watengenezaji wa kizazi kipya kama Kaytranada, Sango, na Knxwledge wanaendelea kubeba mwenge huu. Wanachukua mbinu za MPC — ile hisia ya kupiga kwa mikono, ile furaha ya kutafuta sampuli nzuri kwenye rekodi za zamani — na kuzichanganya na sauti za kisasa. Matokeo ni muziki ambao unasikika wa leo lakini una kina cha historia.

MPC haikuumba hip-hop. Hip-hop ulikuwepo kabla yake — katika vinyago vya DJ Kool Herc, katika maneno ya Grand Master Flash, katika nguvu ya Afrika Bambaataa. Lakini MPC ilichukua moyo wa hip-hop — ule hamu wa kuchukua kitu kilichokuwepo na kukifanya kipya, ule ujasiri wa kufanya muziki bila idhini ya mtu yeyote, ile imani kwamba sauti yako ina thamani — na kuupa lugha mpya, zana mpya, nguvu mpya.

MPC haijafa. Iko hai katika kila wimbo ambao unafanya kichwa chako kitikise bila kukusudia.
